5/6/10 - Sustainability peer learning network
Session led by Gary Langenwalter
Embedding triple bottom line sustainability in organizations
2 ways to change an organization:
- Outsource to consultants
- Peer learning network of non-competing companies - learn from each other
Much lower cost, peers trust each other
Results are much better than traditional consulting
Confidentiality is required, handshake is the only contract
Steering committee meets 1x per month to define issues to focus on
1 senior executive from each of 12 participating companies
Meet at each other's place of work
1 paid facilitator who is not allowed to market to the companies - each org gives equally toward the fee
Q Is this similar to board of directors? A It's designed to help businesses make more money, attract and keep the best talent, etc.
Must have a high level of buy-in
Model could work for many businesses but they must have a facilitator and the cost could be prohibitive for small business - how can this be made available to them?
In Canada support funding exists from the government
Works best in person - 1 hour face to face
Ongoing group
Facilitator is critical
Q How does the people piece take shape? Could there be an organization focusing just on this part? A Over time this can be more and more integrated. The money can be the motivator but this will lead to the people part.
